Chapter Seven
“No, Rex, you told me that you’d be starting on the plumbing today,” Zack said, trying not to let the exasperation creep into his voice. He was fuming mad at his contractor. The guy had promised to get the renovations ready for the opening of Angel’s Rest, the facility for GLBT homeless youth that Zack and his philanthropic contributors were opening. Cynthia Markwell, a college friend who was highly connected in Los Angeles city politics, had encouraged a few wealthy entrepreneurs to donate funds to renovate several thousand square feet of commercial space adjacent to Zack’s online BDSM club in Culver City, turning it into a residential group home for homeless GBLT teens.
He couldn’t believe that the project was coming together as quickly as it had. Only nine months ago, his friend and fellow Dom, Phoenix, had moved their first homeless kid, Wade, then known as Trick, into DOMZ.com and the very personal reality of GLBT homeless youth had become a front and center focus for Zack. Within four months, he had four formerly homeless kids living at DOMZ.com and his knowledge of the problem of street throwaways had grown exponentially. The current project would allow for a dorm setting able to house up to forty kids with communal and private shower facilities, as well as a full kitchen, workout room, common areas and counseling rooms. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narc-Anon, and Al-Anon had agreed to host meetings on the premises for any of the youth who wanted to fellowship with other addicts involved in the programs.
Zack had asked his lover Cassidy Ryan, an LAPD detective, to check if his friends in narcotics knew of a good counselor who might want to become involved as a director at the center. The name Dr. Beatrice Bryce had come up. He had scheduled an appointment with the good doctor this afternoon. The fact that she was a medical doctor whose specialty was addiction, an addictionologist to be precise, was a bit intimidating to Zack. Though Zack was a very bright man and a success in business, he had never gone past high school in his education, and knew nothing about addiction or how it affected the GLBT youth homeless population that was the focus of Angel’s Rest, yet he was both excited and intimidated to meet her. His contractor, made apologies for his tardiness and after a few chastising words, Zack hung up, having been assured that Rex and his crew would have the plumbing finished in time for the city inspector the following Friday, remaining on schedule. His intercom buzzed and he pressed a button.
“Yes, Logan?”
“Mr. Teak, Dr. Bryce is here to see you, sir,” his receptionist’s voice announced.
“Thank you, Logan. Have Vesper show her back to my office if she’s around.”
“Yes, sir; she’s right here, sir,” Logan replied.
Before Zack was disconnected, he heard Logan addressing Vesper. A few moments later there was a rap at the door and he bid them enter, rising from his desk and walking around the front of it.
